| The world is in a severe state of crisis, engendered, in
the main, by the US President’s response to the terrorist attack of 11 September last year.
The war in Afghanistan and the recent upsurge of Israeli brutality are linked, as is the
proposed attack on Iraq. Basic to each is the settlement of old scores. Such behaviour of
childhood is an ignoble and irresponsible method of dealing with events which threaten the
well-being of the world. The Masters do not advocate appeasement of terrorism, but the manner
of response in Afghanistan and the Middle East is not to Our taste. It takes no account of the
causes of terrorism — the poverty, frustration, humiliation and despair — and merely
perpetuates the violence and brutality. Lost in the glamours of self-pity and injured pride,
America has lost also wisdom, caution and a sense of proportion.
Israel, meanwhile, stung into action by suicide bombings, as always over-reacts, using as excuse “a war against terrorism” to impose its will. In the shameless persecution and humiliation of Mr Arafat, Israel’s leaders and army should take no pride. The people of Israel, more than most, should understand the agony of the oppressed. When will these men learn that the world belongs to all? They are neither rulers nor policemen whose wealth and might confer control of others. When they share that wealth for the General Good they will see the end of terrorism, and sleep at night more soundly. The men of power, who seek to run the world for the benefit of the few, are drunk on the power which they wield, unearned. More and more, it becomes evident that a wiser voice is needed in the world, one that will be listened to from many points of view. Such a voice, the voice of Maitreya, will soon be heard above the cries for revenge and hate. Soon, the world will awaken to His presence in our midst and the Great Choice will be offered to men. Thus is this a great testing time for humanity. Thus is this the time of decision, a time without precedent. When men understand this, they will rally to the banner of Maitreya and make known their demands for justice and freedom. They will show their willingness to share and to serve, and thus remake this world. Thus will it be, and thus will men renew their ancient pledge, and retrace their footsteps to divinity.
